Who will replace Gareth Southgate?
Football has moved on. Some fans have not. 20 years ago Don Carlo would have been white hankeyed out of Madrid and won next to nothing for being so pragmatic but England expects every perceived minnow to be dispatched with swashbuckling sexy football. Even though we are Europa league at best. Its weird.
Eddie Howe with his 2-2 draws and lack of clean sheets is a really poor choice at that level. (happy to be proved wrong) Carsley? Potter? It looks like more tournaments in the wilderness again. Unless the FA stage a coup and get a tried and tested foreign Premier league winning coach. Hugely unlikely but would be a highly entertaining journey.
A new club manager can take a year or more spent daily with his squad to mould them into a winning style, but an international manager has very little time with his players who come from disparate clubs and styles. Surely international success is more about the overall quality of the players than any innate ability of the manager? I think getting the right international manager is mostly down to luck. I'd expect that good club managers would usually much prefer to stay where they are or go to another club.
By all accounts Gareth was a key player in modernising the England team structure.Kai wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 2:19 pmGood point, since when do you have to play amazing football to have a chance of winning something, was never on board with that sentiment. Look what Greece have done in the past, or Real at club level recently. When you've got a squad full of world class players and match-winners you're always in with a shout, for all of Spain's brilliance the final was open until the very end.
But not having any world class coaches to fully utilize these top players was always going to be a mismatch. Never felt right, just seems like the FA were looking for the biggest yes-man they could find after the Big Sam fiasco, when they should be looking for the best available coach.
No official rule against foreign managers, surely this has to be abused and not used as a self imposing handicap, going domestic is just a luxury that not every country can afford.
If not, for whatever reason, then Eddie Howe is probably their best bet.
It's always been his game tactics and lack of dyamism with subs that has worked against him.
Until we see a brave, innovative manager we'll never know how good or bad Southgate really was. It would seem the next manager won't have the banker of goals from Kane for much longer.
I like Watkins but I'm not entirely convinced about him matching Kane's numbers.
Carsley has come through the same process as Southgate with the FA.
Read today that Poch is interested in the job. He seems the biggest fish at the moment and he won't embarass the FA like Allardyce. Plus he likes high energy attacking play.
Why would someone of his calibre would accept the possibility/probability of seeing his reputation broken on the anvil of England?
Potter would snatch the FA's hand off, but he flopped at Chelsea managing big egos.

I doubt Howe will be interested as the Newcastle Owners, non English, said the FA would have to pay millions in compensation. Apparently when he signed a new contract there is a clause about being poached by other clubs and football associations.
Plus for him the resources at his disposal at Newcastle are only going to increase. If he survives. But yes I'm surprised at his odds and would be even more surprised if he went for it. His stock is pretty good, England is for someone that's held in high regard. Which is why I think they'll go for Carsley as interim. If he does well they may stick with him. But the FA have a knack of stunning us with their decisions, so who knows?Archery1969 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 7:33 pmI doubt Howe will be interested as the Newcastle Owners, non English, said the FA would have to pay millions in compensation. You laugh, but the FA will be desperate to fill the role with someone that meets their Leadership Diversity Code.
Currently the only two names on the whole Betfair list that would qualify are Sarina @ 140, and Rio Ferdinand @ 700.
They could just pick up Pep Guardiola next summer if they promise to drop the 115 charges nowjamesedwards wrote: ↑Sun Jul 21, 2024 3:13 pmYou laugh, but the FA will be desperate to fill the role with someone that meets their Leadership Diversity Code.

I reckon Howe may be doing the old thing of saying he's "committed" to NUFC. Well yes he is contractually. But that comment is a good bargaining strategy to get a better deal from England for himself and NUFC.
