aiming to be able to say self made millionaire...
In three words or less
Actually, I rather like the idea of killing the bigoted 2@s - perhaps I should have.ShaunWhite wrote: ↑Tue Mar 28, 2017 3:59 pmHaving lived near GCHQ I'm used to people saying "I can't tell you what I do", or "I could tell you but I'd have to kill you" ... that seems like a good answer for the nosey neighbours.

What my neighbours think...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkpbkDB7EUk
Reviving an old thread but it's my auto-repeat tune of the day and it reminded me of this topic.

"Ganbler"! Hmmmm, I would say you are a Bettor. To my mind what we do is not gambling, it's betting. Gambling is a game of chance where the outcome is random whereas we inject an element of assessment. If we were gamblers we would toss a coin to find our selections. To improve the image of what we do we need to educate Joe Public of the difference.
And I had similar to Anna with my neighbour. He laughed when it came up in discussion and made it clear that I was bound to lose money as only bookmakers make money. I tried to explain that the Betting Exchanges were no different to the Stock Exchange in the way they worked but his mind was already closed to rational debate. Then to my amazement he had a friend over from Ireland whose profession was ... a bookmaker. When I raised this with my neighbour his view was that bookmaker is a profession whereas a gambler like me was a fool! He buys and sells antiques but he saw that as totally different because it involved skill!!

BTW the bookmaker was a real Irish bookmaker (apologies to non stereotyped Irish members). In discussion he was talking in fractional, I said I prefer decimal because it's much easier to see which is larger and which is smaller for short priced horse and that fractional was too complicated. His reply? He felt decimal was complicated and fractional, once you know the order of value, is much easier!!
