My guess is you will have to wait a few years before the next title. I'd bet on it.

Knowing who might be on the other side of the bet will make me more cautious about backing United to win anything next season! :)

I think there is a lot of bad blood to be spilt just yet and the finance issues are key as well. No trophies this year and no european football next year will have a big impact on their purse and the glazers are not financiers looking to invest, they are there to extract value from the company. So it's a tough few years unless they spend to rebuild. So I'm watching for signs that they have the funds to compete at the level of other clubs. That will be the key.

There's talk of United's new manager having something like £150 million to play with over the summer. With that kind of money, you could replace the aging players and the dead wood, and probably end up with a stronger squad than that which one the Premiership by 11 points a year ago.

In the midfield and up front, we are strong. We just need a few top class defenders (and ideally a world class goal keeper), and £150 million should more than pay for that.

Also, Van Gaal seems like a no nonsense manager in the Fergie mold, and will hopefully get rid of the lazy and rebellious players over the summer.

So on reflection, I might bet against you on United winning something next season, especially if we play well in the first few games. :)

It's gonna get worse before it gets better Jeff - United finish the season at St Mary's :D

If he gets rid of the lazy players that will mean you also need a new strike force and a few midfielders ;)

On a serious note, they should get rid of giggs (no coaching role) and make sure ferdinand does not get a new contract given to him. I wouldnt be surprised with them having success for so long they couldnt handle failure and blamed moyes and made his job harder as their attitude probably rubbed off on to younger players. Out with the old, in with the new!

They would have to finance that £150m with more debt which they are already paying 6% interest on or something like that.

Googling seems to bring up a figure of £350-400m in debt. Financed by big % interest payments to the Glazers. Somebody is doing well from all this.

It's hard to know who was responsible for the unrest during the Moyes reign (although I hope that Van Gaal will find out and get rid of them). However, Ferdinand is getting on a bit, so it might be time for him to leave anyway.

As for Giggs, I hope he's retained on the coaching staff. He's been at United since he was a teenager, so he will be good for continuity. One of the huge mistakes Moyes made was to get rid of Fergie's backroom staff.

Yep, and it's surprising that the club was willing to sanction £28 million on Fellaini and a £300,000 a week contract for Rooney when they are apparently in such a precarious position.

Maybe the Glazers take the view that the club is screwed if they don't spend big, so they might as well go for glory and hope for the best!

What we need is oil money!

They bought salford fc in the end didnt they? Becks probably just got confused when speaking to the money. Being from London he thought the only team from the city of salford was Man U and he wasnt sure how many zeros were on 200k.
