It can't be that different to some of the stuff they've had to do in Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland, surely? Only at least here, the people they're up against generally don't have firearms or bombs on them...andyfuller wrote:Problem is the Army aren't trained for this sort of thing.
I hope they don't have to, but they are told in no uncertain terms that they may do so, if they have to. At very least, I hope the army are allowed to use rubber bullets.andyfuller wrote:They aren't going to start firing their SA 80's anytime soon that is for sure.
Let's say you have a situation where a bunch of looters are ransacking a store, but the police are frightened of storming the place. Special forces would be ideal, because they're quite good at taking buildings where there might be an ambush waiting!andyfuller wrote: There is quite a difference between the two situations and I think the SAS have bigger fish to fry than some low life criminals.

If you live by the sword...andyfuller wrote: Yes a few of them would be killed no doubt but also quite a few good honest hard working families would be left without their mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters.
Sorry, but if someone dies in a shoot-out with the police, that's their lookout IMHO...

Sky just interviewed a guy who gave a good view on things:
He said you get these guys driving around in their cars, then off they go and before you know it there is heaps of them appearing from no where.
They head off in their cars get on the all important Blackberry and send out the message about where they are going to hit and which shops specifically (A reporter said earlier they had seen messages with a specific shop hit list).
He was suggesting to get all local residents out on the streets and telling these kids to bugger off when they turn up.
Who said the Big Society was dead

I was talking about the police and innocent people who could be injured or killed.Ferru123 wrote: Sorry, but if someone dies in a shoot-out with the police, that's their lookout IMHO...
Wow!
I had no idea the problem was so widespread - I'd gotten the impression that it was confined to a couple of boroughs...

There are 1,700 police on the streets they just said, the thin blue line is pretty thin when stuff like this happens.

It's time to bring in emergency measures and quash this nonsense before it really gets out of control!!!

Police supposedly ordering all London clubs to call off all upcoming games according to Sky News.
I hope that footballers come out and appeal for calm. If someone the kids look up to (like Rio Ferdinand) condemns the violence, it might have some impact...
