Abusive Language: Using offensive, insulting, or abusive language and/or gestures.....

"ungentlemanly conduct" typically results in a yellow card unless it escalates to violence or extreme abuse.

So you'd expect a yellow (or a 2nd yellow) but I suppose it's the subjective interpretation of 'extreme abuse'. Sets a good example though. Whatever it was he clearly knew he shouldn't be doing it.
