What in the hell is going on over there in the UK? London looks like scenes from a post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie. Some guys finally figured out the way to grab 100% of profits was simply to snatch the goods?

I think the big mistake we made was not to go in hard against the first group of rioters. That sent out a dangerous message.

If one good thing comes out of these riots, it will hopefully be that we reassess the way policing is done in this country. The police in this country are terrified of being accused of using excessive force (even against violent criminals) or of being accused of being racist, so they are not as robust as they otherwise would be. That needs to change...

A senior police officer has just said that the army won't be brought in.

I've also heard that police officers are coming down to London from as far away as Yorkshire. Let's hope trouble doesn't break out in Leeds or Bradford...

Cameron has just made a statement.

It's a joke! Lots of tough talking, but the only measure he's announced is more police on the streets of London!

Useless! I bet the thugs are in stiches of laughter!

No need to be rude, Mugs. Imho they were having fun. Do you believe they were expressing their feelings in some sophisticated way?

They are pulling police from as far away as Yorkshire to cover London tonight. But what will happen to the places these police have been pulled from?

I'm already hearing Nottingham and other cities are going to be targeted. And the police that cover these cities will be elsewhere covering somewhere already trashed 24 hours too late.

Worrying times. And the definition of fun needs to be rewritten if it includes arson, attempted murder, the destruction of business, looting and scaring the local population out of it's wits.

CaerMyrddin -

I think what you were saying was that the rioters are rioting for the sake of rioting (rather than being politically motivated).

But by calling it 'fun', you might give the impression that you don't think it's a big deal. However, I realise that wasn't your intention, and that English isn't your first language. :)

Oh, I'm really sorry then!

I do think it's a big deal and I was really impressed with what I've seen. I can't hardly imagine how it feels to have such a mess around home. Sorry!

And yes, I think they are rioting just to get the stuff and play along (well, can I say that?). Some rioters were breaking the shops with a smile in the face. This has nothing to do with the riots we've seen in LA for instance.

16,000 Police tonight, all leave cancelled, England v Holland called off, Parliament recalled for Thursday.

Will people come out tonight and riot again? The way they run when charged by the police makes me think they won't to any great number in London but who knows.

I will be tuning in pop corn at the ready.

After 9/11, I thought that the anti-terrorist measures were OTT.

But I can now understand where the Americans were coming from. I consider myself to be a civilised person, and I don't believe in punishment for punishment's sake. But if the army were to open fire on the rioters, I'd probably cheer. These bastards are trying to rape my great nation, and I take that personally...
