Hello all ,

I was checking the place odds on horse racing 21:05 Ripon . There were 8 runners ( 1 Non Runner ) so 7 runners on this race , betfair home page was showing ' 3 to be placed ' and Betangel closed the market with 3 placed horses.

As i read on place bets rules ;

4 or less Win only , 5-7 1,2 places , 8-11 1,2,3 extc..

I checked one more race after this , 21:15 Rosc. There were 9 runners but 2 of them were non runners so it was 7 runners . Betfair home page showed 3 places again but betangel closed the market with 2 placed horses. I added screen shots.

So , which one is correct ? I think if there are some no runner horses , place numbers have to change . Isnt it looks wrong that there are 7 runners but place is 3.

I need to learn whats the difference between these 2 races . ( 21:05 Ripon and 21:15 Rosc) both had 7 runners but one of them closed with 3 places and other closed with 2 places.

Thanks for replies.

Those place rules are for bookmakers only.

Betfair and Betdaq dont change the amount of places if there are non runners. You also often see place betting on 4 runner races for the first two places on exchanges where the books are win only.

Best way is to check the percentages. If they are around 200% they are paying 2 places, if they are around 300% they are paying 3.

Ive been caught out before place laying horses in 7 runner races that come 3rd without realising that there has been a non runner.

Sorry, i misread your post, i see what you mean now.

In your example the first screenshot was pre race, and they were betting to around 300%. So 3 places.

Your second screenshot was a pic of when the race was suspended and it had finished. The reason the 3rd was still showing there at 1.15 was that the first and second were 5 lengths ahead, and if you were watching the race and betting in running on the place market, it wasnt obvious who was going to get 3rd until more or less right on the line or after it, so nobody would have risked taking the 1.01.

You do get winners sometimes that win without ever touching 1.01, i think that was just one of those, but in the place market.
