Hi,

I have a laptop with a 3g mobile dongle which i currently use as an emergency backup.

What i would like to do is connect my laptop to my wireless adsl connection and have the 3g connection working in the background.

The adsl connection would work as default with the 3g connection taking over should the default connection fail.

Is this possible?

Cheers,
Simon

Yes should do - easy enough to try it. connect the Laptop to the internet via your wireless, then connect your 3G. Load up bet angel and have a market running. Then turn your wireless router off at the plug simulating a power cut, does it carry on using the 3G and refreshing the market?

This is what I do on my back up laptop and it works but I would double check it works for you as you don't want to find out it doesn't when it comes to actually needing it!

I can't seem to get this working.

The problem being that no matter which connection i start first it is defaulting to the 3g connection.

Hi,

One thing you could try is going in to the TCP/IP properties of both of you network adapters and change the metric settings.

1. Go into Manage Network Connections
2. Right click on a network adapter and select properties.
3. Choose TCP/IP v4
4. Click on Advanced button
5. Change the metric setting to whatever you desire.
6. Save your new settings

The lower the metric setting the higher priority the network card has. So set your wireless one to be a lower number than your 3G adapter.

I've not tested this personally, so not sure if it will definitely work for you. Also make sure that you take a note of any settings before changing them so that you can revert if all goes wrong (metric was set to automatic on my PC).

The instructions above are for Vista, other Windows OS's may be slightly different, but should all have the same/similar functionality.

Good Luck :).

I think I'm just going to throw this one in the to hard basket.

I looked in to your solution Bob but my 3g modem is listed under Dial-up in Network Connections and not given as an option in Advanced Settings-Adapters and Bindings in XP.
