The markets seemed pretty hard to read in general today but my biggest problem was getting stung a few times on a few big spikes! must of been a punter backing, wiped out about 10 tics a few times. That really ruined my day :(

My bad timing didn't help. Oh well at least it's Friday :D

Same here, it's really hard to manage such huge moves in no time.

I'm gonna stop it for today, I can't handle all this volatility and was wiped out!

Also, as far I as can tell, there were two races that started earlier, about 60 seconds.

On both I had an opened position and did ok on the first one, but lost 30 ticks on the second, as the horse steamed like crazy...

Really hard to handle my timing in the markets without tv footage...

Was a tough day, particularly for anyone who relys a lot on WOM strategies. Confusion over the off time at Lingfield didn't exactly help either, I couldn't believe they decided to intentionally run the first few and last one 5 mins late, but the middle races go off on time. I don't see why they couldnt just leave things as they were none of the races where anywhere near those at Catterick. Where's the consistancy?

Very tough. When this happens I look back to previous years to see what happened and curiously it was exactly the same. We often find this, history repeats itself with amazing regularity in the racing markets.

Today I held it together pretty well but one wrong call really sent the total for the day backwards.

Wow

30 ticks is a massive loss

You must have gambled on the price coming back & it just disappeared over the hills. This is always one of the most difficult scenarios for pro traders to evaluate - do I bail out quick, or do I wait for it to possibly come back

Yes, it was really massive, but I didn't gamble over the price coming back, I cut the loss imediately, at the best available price, which was a smart move as the price came in even more and the horse eventually won. Off course this is really hard to manage, do I cut it out immediatly, or do I try to get a better price? As far as I can tell, I tend to emphasise money protection, so I cut the loss as soon as possible (also because I have very little knowledge on in-play stratagies).

Fortunately, we're talking about very small ticks, €1, I got all my cash out of betfair, except for €100 (for discipline purposes). I thought this is the best compromise to me, so that I can learn without having the pressure of managing high liabilities.

I was doing really great this week, had a 22% gain since Monday, mainly due to a €9.21 profit on a single race yesterday. Had only 3 redbooks (with really low figures) during the whole week, till today...

I'm going to set a new rule, close all my positions 75/80 seconds before the off. Please don't take advantage on this info

I think I'm on the right way, I've managed to successfully spot and stop my tendency to overtrade. I still have a tendency to prefer laying rather then backing, but I'm fighting on that field too...

Hopefully Peter's course will give me a better insight and new ideas to improve my trades.

Again, please excuse my 'foreign' english, it must sound really strange for you sometimes. Also, I'm sorry if I bothered you to death with the extension of my post, latinos are very communicative fellows!

Were you closing this trade out pre race or I/R?

I don't recall seeing any pre race market dip 30 ticks today, unless I was asleep?

I did see some spikes but nothing near 30 ticks????

Just managed to get a decent trade in on the 18:35 on that favourite, it bounced right off 2's.

I got caught as the race went inplay earlier than it was scheduled, about 60 seconds. I heard Peter's voice :) saying I had 60 seconds, then all the sudden, suspended, inplay...

The move was inplay... Did anyone got caught in this one too, or is there something wrong in my setup?

Your setup is wrong - no races started early today. Check your computer clock is correct.

What an odd feel to the day so far, Grade 2 Ascot race £50k prize money turnsover £500k and then the next race at Lingers worth £6.5k beats it! I do wonder just how much real gambling money is on Betfair sometimes.

perhaps the footie has something to do with it - two FA cup matches currently in play.

Good to see some classy racing though ;)

Do you have any volume figures for typical races in pre-API days?
