I seem to have upset ilovesnickers. I was not sure why he felt the need to call my article "pathetic" and "plain wrong" but a quick scan through historical posts soon revealed the reason.
Let me say here and now, I have no issue with someone disagreeing with what I write; never have done and never will! In fact, I welcome comments because I feel it encourages debate and keeps us all involved. There is always a but, and here it is. If you don't agree with the content then explain why and give your side of things. Do not simply say "pathetic" and "plain wrong" without giving a reason behind the comments. To be honest, don't use inflammatory comments, just say why you disagree and give your opinion.
The post was written mid afternoon on Monday and obviously most of the content can be gleaned from other racing sites. There is only so much information available and I can only put across what I see, what I read and what I hear, the same as anyone else doing a similar task. I have no magic wand to create some useful "original" content, not at Cheltenham, whereas at other meetings I can because I know a lot of owners and connections. Most of the information is private and never used to lay horses, I get a message when they feel it has a chance. I do share this with friends but only after connections have had their money on. Euler will confirm this as he has received such information.
An example of how tricky things can be. Last year I was with a connection to Un Temps pour Tout and was told in confidence it was a penalty kick. I was fortunate enough to be in hospitality with them and they could not see it beaten. I politely enquired about the horse for yesterday's race and they were concerned about the ground quickening up. They still thought it would run a decent race and we now know the result, it beat my preferred horse Holywell! It ran a stormer and I am very happy for them!
The mention of Novice in the title does imply improvement, I do not disagree with that, but this is Cheltenham and so the form and potential is there for all to see. Yes, you may find one that improves out of all recognition but then you would have to be privy to some extra information known only to the inner circle; good luck with that!
I mentioned "in my humble opinion this horse (Altior) should be favourite". Many will know a bit more about me and will also notice the use of the word humble. I did not say I was right, I said it was my humble opinion. I based that opinion on the form of the horse in relation to others and the room for improvement that was likely to come in a true run race at Cheltenham. It was the best horse in the race in my view and the result confirmed it. That is why it should have been the favourite but bookies were taking no chances. When Min lost they breathed a sigh of relief because that race saved them money and a lot of ongoing doubles and trebles hit the floor.
How can I mention anything other than trainers with horses in form, likely to go well on the day? I am not Mystic Meg and cannot see the future. In this era of information it is almost impossible to have an original piece of data unknown to the majority and the horses form is analysed by ratings firms, handicappers, etc. to the nth degree.
If you disagree then say so and offer an alternative view. Please don't spit the dummy and cause an issue because it helps nobody at all. Please remember I was asked to provide the summary, I receive nothing for it and it takes a fair amount of time to compile them.
Thanks
JG
Cheltenham 2016 Day 1 post furore
Hi Jolly Green,
As a new member of this forum and someone who has near zero knowledge on horse racing fundamentals, I would just like to thank you for the time and effort that you put into writing these articles.
Your guidance has allowed me to zone in on specifics before the off, whereas without it, my focus may have been very scattered and traded horses that were perhaps relatively -EV.
While I'm in the mode of thanking people's contributions. I may as well give a shout out to the man himself. So if you are reading this Peter (Webb), you should know your videos (youtube), blog and just general input into the entire realm of sports trading is very much appreciated!. Your dedication and passion is inspiring. Your analytical Chelthenham videos came in very handy especially since this is my first time trading these big meetings.
I recall in one of the videos you mentioned that you get a buzz from knowing your customers are doing well. So to this end, I have attached a snapshot of Cheltenham trading results thus far. The grossed totals are not important as I know they are an absolute pittance in comparison to what a boss like you turns over. The main point is that your education has provided me with a better understanding and equipped me with an appropriate amount of confidence trading these markets and here's a little proof
Summary of Day I and II:
Day 1- Relatively straight forward day. Made a little in all 7. In hindsight, I probably could have yielded a little more but thought it would be wise to approach cautiously as I'm still a rookie in these high liquidity markets and didn't know what to expect.
Day 2- Sort of choked in the first 2 races, and I think that knock in confidence spilled over to subsequent races hence a mixed bag of results for the day. Last two races could have been potentially very lucrative but it didn't turn out that way as a consequence of indecisiveness and lack of conviction. But not all bad- 3 of 6 and (1 scratch) for the day and learning everyday
Happy trading guys, cheers!
