Maximum trade size

How do you work out maximum size of trade you can open without leaving yourself over-exposed?

I'm a long way off needing to worry about this, but I'm just curious!

For me its a judgement between the average volume going through the market and how quickly my orders are filling. I'll often start with a small order then increase them as the market warms up.
