I have done a lot of reading over the past 3 - 4 months around sports trading, ranging from brief articles on the Betfair website, to a handful of ebooks. It seems there are, in theory at least, a multitude of strategies for trading. However the two more generic methods that I am interested in are In Play v Pre Off and the extent to which they are legitimately profitable. From what I have analysed, it appears that the greater profits come from In Play trades, compared to smaller but more frequent profits that Pre Off trading can bring.

What I really would like to know, is whether there are any traders that make consistent profits from trading purely In Play based on what they are seeing in front of them and the position that took up Pre Off. I am curious, as I was planning on focusing solely on In Play trades, however having done further reading I am starting to wonder if Pre Off trading may be more consistent in the long run.

Thanks

Hi there,

I've struggled with both these elusive approaches and have concluded that the IP route requires small but frequent stakes and short exit points (no more than a few ticks). Think of it as scalping, but only when you have got the initial trade matched and greened up do you then place any subsequent trades (this is my take on it -others' mileage may vary). This has worked quite well for me, tho it has to be said, not every race is suitable and you may find that minor tweaks to one rule may work better on flat races than on the jumps.

As for pre-race. I think this is really the way forward but does produce smaller average profits certainly in he early stages. The key to the pre-race markets are identifying safe entry and exit points that don't take you into the gamble category. In short, discipline and rigour (which I know are your hallmarks anyway!).

I would suggest you take a brief look (in practice mode) at both approaches and see where you get to. FWIW, pre-race from my experience is best viewed as swing opportunity, rather than scalping. So whilst you may feel you are sitting out a lot of the *action*, as and when an appropriate candidate appears, you can realistically be looking at quite a healthy return.

Hope this inspires hope :)

Great advice from Jimibt.

If you go onto Youtube, Atherton, there are lots of videos on the Bet Angel channel

Watching these videos has helped me enormously.

Personally, I'd try to master pre-race (as I'm trying to do) before looking at inplay.

Yes, it's a bit more exotic but you've got to bear in mind, that you are going up against on course traders and people who can read a race perhaps better than you can.

Stick with it and once you are comfortable in practice mode, start trading with £2 stakes.

Good luck with it.
