Just been reading a PDF leaflet Mark Davies mentioned on his blog and there were some quotes I thought were interesting:

"Three of Betfair’s five biggest customers on racing are overseas, and had never bet on it before Betfair’s arrival because it didn’t represent value for money."

"We know that ultimately, most of the money lost by our customers comes to us."

As regards winners, it is wrong to believe that
racing can’t have punters winning. Although
punters overall must lose for racing to survive,
since racing is dependent on profits of operators
and punter loss, it is true on Betfair – just
as everywhere else (where no punter is levied
and taxed either) - that individual customers
might win in a given year; but that over time, the
overwhelming majority do not. The number who
win two or three years in a row can be counted on
your fingers.

Find that very hard to believe - there must be hundreds of traders making money year after year.

I think he was referring purely to punters. I don't think there are many hundreds of successful traders though, it would be interesting to find out for sure

His blog is:

Definitely worth reading but also be aware that it is being written by someone who is only ever going to be pro Betfair and as with everything you read do it with an open mind but also question what you read.

Fundamentally, if there aren't a reasonable number of users making good regular profits, why introduce the Premium charge? There would be nobody to collect it from!
Personally I'd be suprised if there's more than 100-200 good traders in the horse markets, they're just not big enough markets to support very many.

As when one person loses another wins does this quote therefore mean that ultimately, most of the money WON by our customers comes to us (i.e. Betfair)?
