I see Sky and Discovery have had a major fallout, and as a result Eurosport (amongst other non sport channels) will be dropped from the Sky platform for Uk and Ireland subscribers

Might have an impact on the liquidity of some events

I work on the retail stands for Sky and we are going to get shedloads of crap about this. People will be saying, "I only got it for Eurosport/Discovery/History. Are you going to bring the prices down?" And of course they won't be.

This could be a bit of brinkmanship between Sky and Discovery Networks, it's hard to tell.

Anyway, I'm being made redundant at the end of February along with about 170 others on the retail stands; it seems like the decision to pay so much for PL football is starting to bite across the business.

With the upcoming price increases I can't help thinking I'm getting out at the right time.

Mike

14:25 Just had my first complaint at the stand. I can feel some stress leave coming on...

I dumped Sky about 3 years ago, I've never missed it for even a minute.

The loss of key sport almost made me do it, but without Eurosport no chance of keeping it.

Shame, but only really use them for the aus open and that's only because I can't find a faster feed. Incidentally does anyone know a better feed for the tennis? Eurosport seems around 5 seconds off real time but Betfair video is even further behind that.

I wouldn't use anything that has the smell of the Australian/American Murdoch attached to it!

Literally just received an email from sky saying our package price is going up by £1.75. I don't really understand why people bother with sky nowadays unless they want, (or in our case) need it for the sport. There is so much TV available through OD services and Netflix/ prime video arguably has more better quality tv on it than sky. Blu ray's are dirt cheap now. I just bought every episode ever of house for 50 quid and with no adverts, and you can rent any new release movie for £3.50 through a number of services so why bother with Sky movies? They just seem irrelevant now.

Sky going dish-free from next year will be part of their answer to just that. The fly in the ointment though, is broadband speeds. If you've got anything less than double-digit download speeds it's going to be a pretty frustrating experience.

There is more to this than meets the eye. Discovery have a comprehensive distribution agreement with Liberty Global, the company that have just bought Formula 1. Liberty Global also own Virgin Media, who will continue to offer Eurosport and the Discovery channels...
