Just walked into town for some odds and sods. On my way in, I noticed a car parked on the footpath with its engine running. The car was empty.
Came back from town a few minutes later.
The same car was parked in the same spot, engine still running and still empty.
I knocked on the nearest door and politely asked if that, (thus pointing), was his car. The male occupant of the house said 'Yes'. I politely pointed out that it was illegal to leave an empty car running in a public place.
The man told me that the pavement was his private property and to mind my own business.
I pointed out, again politely, that the footpath was part of the public highway and that, regardless, his car was needlessly polluting the atmosphere.
He told me that pollution was nonsense and that he agreed with President Trump.
He then got in his car and started to rev the guts out of it.
His wife came out to see what all the noise was about.
I explained.
She told me to mind my own business and that her husband had a heart problem. I pointed out that it may have something to do with pollution from cars. I left.
Sometimes, I despair.
Sometimes, I dispair
Somebody did this outside the office the other day, so I jumped in it and drove it the other side of the road and parked it. You should have seen their face. They threatened to call the police so I told them that was fine and told them where I worked. Nothing happened.
Priceless.Euler wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2017 9:45 amSomebody did this outside the office the other day, so I jumped in it and drove it the other side of the road and parked it. Don't do this again Peter, or anyone. If he had called the police and pressed a complaint they could well have prosecuted you for "taking and driving away without the owner's permission" if convicted, and you wouldn't have a leg to stand on, your licence would have been endorsed with a UT40 offence. This is exactly the same endorsement that car thieves and joyriders get. They are not usually charged with "theft" because its hard to prove that they intended to permanently deprive the owner of the car, so they go for "taking and driving away" instead. To most car insurers its the worst possible endorsement, even worse than a DR10 (drinking), understandably, car insurers hate car thieves.Euler wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2017 9:45 amSomebody did this outside the office the other day, so I jumped in it and drove it the other side of the road and parked it. If you think working in the betting industry makes getting financial services difficult, just wait and see what happens when they think you're a car thief as well.
A little like the Austin All Aggro of the 70s. Sorry, my mistake, I meant to type Allegro. There again ....
The Allegro was dubbed 'The worst car of all time' although aficionados of the dark days of British Leyland were of the opinion that the Marina, and its makeover replacement, the Ital, were worthy rivals for this crown.
The puzzling thing is that the All Aggo and Marina/Ital remained in production for 9 years and sold in numbers, not only in the UK, but also abroad.
There was once a guy who was told he'd won the first prize in a competition. When asked what the first prize was, he was told that it was a brand new Austin Allegro. He asked what the second prize was. He was told 'two brand new Austin Allegros'.

Could you imagine how stupid you would feel having to report to the police that you left your car unattended with the keys in the ignition and the engine running and someone come along switched off the engine, locked and secured your car for you but kept your keys

I'm all for the "convenience" approach and removing the keys from the car and locking it is a right neighbourly thing to do imho
