trailing stop doesn't work

i was trying to trade on football matches with big liquidity (very volatile market),using a trailing stop with offsetting of 100 ticks(stop at 3 ticks and place stop at 5 ticks, and some other combinations). when the trade goes your way, then it is usefull tool , but when opposite true - traling stop just doesnt work. the position where it seats doesn't fill, though on high profile matches there is awfull amount of money put.
on horse racing it does work(almost instantly)
on footbal it takes 5,6,7 second to fill an initial position and then some few more to put an offset (already a spot for big troubles).
i understand that big guys can remove the position in some hazardous situations, like set pieces or fast contratack) before my stop triggers, but is it always the case
appreciate any thoughts on that
