Does artibrage exist for the Bookies on Betfair?

A place to discuss anything.

I have a simple question if the bookies odds are lower than Betfair odds does this mean that the bookies use Betfair to arbitrage?

My understanding is that if the Betfair odds were lower than the Bookies then we could arbitrage - as they are not does this mean that Betfair is used by the Bookies for such purposes.

I had a period of arbing with the bookies last year, but within weeks my accounts were being closed.

I spoke with customer services at SportingBet & they highlighted me as a 'steam punter'

Whether they use Betfair or not, they will still be a bunch of bastards

Thanks for the response - very interesting...there's no such thing as free money for the punter.

If anybody can say in principle that once a bookie has been matched on their website then there is nothing to stop them from arbitraging on Betfair then that's all I need to know - its the principle of the thing is all i need to know - have I got my understanding right.

On a similar matter, is it ever possible to arb between Betfair and Betdaq?

There are plenty of arbs all over the place even on Betfair but it really depends on if you can find the time to dig them out. It's worth it if you are starting out but it becomes a bit tough if you try and get any volume out of it.

We had considered setting up an odds comparison service to run on the site so it's quick and easy to find arbs. Would that be of interest to everybody?

Absolutely.

There used to be a program for sale called Value Horse Finder, which compared Betfair win and place prices with bookie prices, and told you what bets to place to guarantee a particular percentage profit whatever the result. Having that kind of facility on Bet Angel would be really useful.

That would be an excellent addition Peter

I usually have bestbetting.com open all day, for Sport trading it's very useful to know what the bookies are offering

I would love something within Bet Angel that would help me find arb opportunities and calculate bet amounts.

Thanks all for the responses - however nobody has indicated if my understanding is correct - if a bookie lays then they can immediately arbitrage on Betfair.

The reason I ask I was looking at job specs for sports traders and part of the job requires monitoring exchanges to ensure that they can balance their books - which got me thinking.

ba1000,

I think yes the bookies can arb on Betfair as long as they have the prices right on course. Thats all they do all do all day so they can spot an arb etc against there prices. I have seem the doing just this on Betfair on course.

Yes love the idea Peter(Bet Angel). Just one question would this be included in BetAngel or an extra to purchase.?

Cheers

Peter - FYI, you can download bookie prices from Oddschecker and Bestbetting.com (this is how Value Horse Finder works).

The major problem with arbing is that you need a massive bank, You will be restricted to tiny amounts by the bookmakers and also the liquidity on betfair for the arbs is sometimes not enough.

I would think that there isn't much longer term success to be had with arbing? Matched betting is good for anyone starting out to make a few hundred.

Good idea. I think a lot of people would appreciate having bookies prices as somethings of a guide anyway
