A cautionary tale indeed! What we don't know is what security safeguards were being used by the poor unfortunate victim. You can't really blame Betfair, too easy for losers to say, "Wasn't me, honest, someone must have nicked my details! The moral of the story is to take every possible precaution and safeguard. We verge on the paranoid! Funds for companies such as Betfair come only from debit cards with strict rules in place on limits, we have what is considered the very best in security software, every update applied, windows UAC at its strictest, passwords changed regularly, you really can't be too careful!

A definite cautionary tell

I've never had issues with Betfair, though I had problems elsewhere last year

I found a brilliant arbing opportunity with the European based bookmaker Expekt.com
Because I was trying to use a UK Debit Card their security measures forced me to fax a copy of my Debit Card - which I did

The following day I went to the cashpoint expecting to see £900 & to my horror found just £3.23

I phoned my bank and found that I had just bought a laptop and a sofa!

Thankfully, I had the money returned, but I would never have a bet with Expekt or bwin again where they want photocopies of my cards

Wow what a terrible story, you gotta feel for the guy thats a big amount of money. I have never experienced problems with Betfair. I have a couple of different accounts and if they ask for a photocopy of my card i refuse as most dont need this. Super Casino wouldnt let me withdraw £1000 to the same card i deposited from untill they recieved a copy of my card. The main point was i could still deposit and they said it was for "security"....what a joke.

I've heard the odd story of telephone bets being placed on wrong accounts but nothing as serious as that. Betfair security are pretty hot so it seems a bit unusal that somebody has had such a bad experiance. I guess there may be mitigating issues but its highly unusual to say the least. To deposit I think you need to have the card security code? I haven't deposited in ages so can't be sure but surely that would be a major hurdle?

You can never be too safe with security. I am, but I have still had my identity stolen twice. I've had to go to extreme measures to prevent this happening again.

I haven't had time to read the story on MSE yet but one thing to check is the My Security section of the My Accounts page via the BF website. It shows the last 10 login attempts, the IP from where each was tried, the country and if it was successful or not.

One other thing of note is that BF place I think a 12 hour delay on all withdrawals after the time they were stung in the Poker cockup. So I am sure if you were quick to spot some iffy things on your account they could freeze the withdrawals before any money left BF.

Also I would think BF would be on the ball with this as without a reliable reputation for security they won't have money customers.

Yes, you still need the security code. I don't use credit cards to deposit money into bookies or betfair, I've been using one of the main e-wallets, should I be worried?

Peter, I would like to invite do develop that story about identity theft, it would be good to know what one can face in the future...
