Hi fellow traders!

I would like to ask some questions regarding TV footage of the UK horse racing, so here we go:

1. I'm based in Portugal, so what provider can I get here?

2. What's the delay I can expect?

3. How expensive is it?

4. About the pictures you can get at the UK, are they DTT? Are they landline based? Or sattelite?

As far I can tell I can get Racing UK or At the Races? Can you advise on which one is better?

Thank you all in advance!

A normal sky box taken from the UK worked fine in Spain giving access to both RUK and ATR, so I presume it would work in portugal too.

As for which is better, if you wanted to see all the races you would need them both. RUK requires a further subscription, ATR has adverts.

Not sure how much it would cost to get a sky box and dish to portugal, or if there are cheaper ways of doing it.

Basic sky subscription needed for ATr is around £30 per month, RUK is an extra £20 on top of that.

I think ATR is about 4 seconds behind live, RUK around 2, though again thats in the UK, dont know if it will be any longer being in portugal, though doubt it will be any quicker.

Thank you for your prompt replies.

oscar123, when you are watching RUK, what technology brings you the images? Is it landline, DTT, sattelite or antenna?

Thank you again ;)

I am not 100% sure if it is available to you in your country but BF provide online pictures of ATR as long as you have staked £2 on a market. The online pictures are in flash now so are as fast as my TV pictures sometimes faster.

They are available from 2 minutes before the off time and all you need to do is self match yourself for £2 on the market and you have access.

You can get an idea of the delay by watching the pictures and seeing when BF turn the market i/r

If you've got family in the UK who can take out a subs at their adress and name then thats probably the best way, you'll need a bigger dish than the sky mini dish though, probably about 80 inches at least. How big you'll need you can find online, the satellite is at astra 28 degrees east, the further away from the UK the bigger the dish you'll need. You wont experience any picture delay compared to UK users.

If that's not an option for you, have a look for specialist satellite providers, either online or in a magazine (every country I've seen has a good satellite mag with plenty of ads for how to get sky from various companies.) This will cost more though. I don't know about Portugal but in France and Spain you pay a one off fee of a few hundred to get you the equipment and a years access.

Hi CaerMyrddin,

It was about 8 years ago I had it set up in spain, im based in the UK now.

I didnt set it up myself, though as far as I know it was a sky box and satellite dish bought over from the UK and set up in spain, seemed to work fine.

Thank you for your answers.

@andyfuller, when I want to enjoy the races I place a lay at 1.01 before the off, it's enough to 'trick' betfair and see the race. There are two problems tough, I can only watch pictures right before the off and the pictures are delaied by about 8 seconds (measured today at one single race, so not a very solid number). For trading purposes I would like to get the full coverage with minimum delay ;)

@hgodden, I wouldn't like to get into much technical detail, as I can't name some things in english. I've been gathering some information and it seems easy to me to setup the whole dish + box, etc system. Nevertheless, I don't have family in the UK, so I'll try to contract directly from here.

@oscar123, it's good to know that kind of info.

Just one final question, is there a chance that at certain events there is a faster broadcaster? As an example, if a sports event is being broadcasted by the national tv it's much faster then when it's DTT based, as it's antenna based...

Thank you again for the replies and please excuse my foreign english ;)
