I've been watching the betfair exchange closely.

The recent race at Auteil, the winning jockey and the horse was clearly going to win 60 metres from the winning line.

I expected betfair to suspend this race however it did not.

So this means anyone could bet large amounts to back to win even when everyone knows the clear winner to the finish line?

A race is never over until its over. And if people still want to lay it then you can back it. Backing at 1.01 is sometimes seen as easy money but remember you only need to lose 1 in 102 races and you're down, and horses lose at 1.01 more often than you might think.

I have seen a horse @ 1.01 more than 40 meters clear in a flat race which suddenly fell before the finish line. Turns out it had a fractured leg.

Not only that but although less likely these days it could lose it in the stewards room if it had interfered with another horse during the race or the jockey failed to weigh in.

The winner of a race is actually "going to win" the moment it leaves the stalls, or even after it's finished its breakfast. It just doesn't know it, and nor do we.
