I struggle to understand the prices on place betting

e.g Classic Swain 3.00NA is trading at 1.93 to win

The race is 1,2 1/4odds, so he should be 1.22 to be placed, but is 1.30

This happens all the time, the prices seem grossly inflated

Is this true, or am I working the odds out wrong?

You can't completely marry the two markets up. Say you have two horses that are both evens shots (in a hyperthetically identical race), so both with 50% chance of winning when either is put in the race. Horse A may actually be more talented than horse B, but may be more quirky or perhaps has a question mark over the ground, with horse B being more reliable. But when it comes to the place market, it may well be that horse B is more likely to run to a place because he is more consistant, whereas horse A may win by 15 lengths or come nowhere at all.

It's a bit like with Man City this season - they could be brilliant and win the league.... or finish mid table
