Has anyone else had success with avoiding trading the favourite in a race?

i think it really depends on the race and conditions in front of you. e.g if there's a clear fave with a lot of volume against it and it's steaming in, then you may want to avoid it if you feel that you've missed the boat. then again, it could continue :D

in all honesty, i'd say it's too broad a proposition...

Why not give it a shot, not all of us stick to solely trading favourites. You might find the fact there's less activity outside the fav that it's easier for you to spot genuine moves amongst the noise.

Imho (as a swinger), if a strategy genuinely has predictive value, runner choice is a minor variable.

well no not really, try trading the 3rd when the fav is heavily odds on. you still have to figure out what's going on there first otherwise you'll just get pushed about by fav

It all depends on the type of market. I've been avoiding short-priced favourites in NSW markets due to the new turnover rules, and found time seems to slow down when trading third-favourites. Whereas on the favourites I can open and close trades a few seconds apart I now find myself sitting, waiting and ready to scratch if the market doesn't move.

I'd sort of go with this as even if you are further down the book then favourite can still have an influence on it, so it's worth learning how it moves.

But my overall view is I will look at the favourite to understand what it is doing, but may not trade it.
