This evening, we learned that some customers could not place bets or connect to Betfair.

Further investigation seemed to isolate this to some people connecting via a VPS. A deeper dive found that this was related to a narrow band of IP addresses, so we investigated further.

It appears the global geolocation service 'MaxMind' has incorrectly changed a range of IP addresses from the UK to Italy, which is the issue's core source. Betfair use MaxMind to ensure customers are blocked from logging in their service from countries where it is not in compliance with local laws.

We have alerted Betfair and related data centres to the issue and they are in contact with MaxMind to correct the error.

If you are affected it's worth filing a report with MaxMind from the IP where you have the error: -

https://www.maxmind.com/en/geoip-web-services-demo

Submit a data correction on that page.

As a workaround in the short term you may want to install a VPN onto your VPS and re-route the traffic through a UK IP on the VPN.

We have tested ProtonVPN (Windows 32bit download) and it worked well. Other VPNs are likely to work but please check specifications to make sure they work on a Windows Server before installing.

We will update this thread with more news as we get it.

Thank you - what should the location of the BA VPS be when reporting?

I've isolated the problem further and it only affects IP's that start with: -

94.76.22*.***
94.76.23*.***

Let me know if this is not the case.

Betfair have indicated they won't provide exceptions and have to wait till MaxMind update their database. So a VPN is on the only workaround at the moment until this happens.

I've been checking the affected IP's again this afternoon and MaxMind appears to have correct the location issue.

I’ve confirmed that Maxmind have reverted my IP back to a U.K. address in Reading. However Betfair still believes I’m in Italy. I have cleared all my browser’s cache, tried different browsers, etc. Any suggestions?

If you are a Bet Angel customer contact our support and we can escalate to Betfair.

We've found out this morning that some customers are fine on the API but not logging in via a website.

Speaking to Betfair this doesn't appear to be a MaxMind issue now, but rather a caching issue with Cloudflare.

Do you have lots of markets in Guardian?
The max is 1000 markets any more than it won’t update properly. The 1000 also includes closed markets.
