Hi,
I have a question about how commission is charged on profits when backing and laying on multiple markets across the same event.
The best way to ask my question is probably one of the examples I had:
On the same event:
1.I backed a dog on the Win Market for £0.38 at odds of 2.66 and it won
(It's showing as a £0.62 win in my Betfair App *which is strange as my maths make that a £0.63 win unless the 2% commission is charged and then shown on screen*)
2. And I also layed the same dog on the Place Market for £0.57 at odds of 1.74 and it placed - meaning I lost (Correctly shows as a £0.42 loss in my Betfair app)
So is the overall 2% commission charged by either:
A. The £0.63 win minus the £0.42 loss making it £0.21 profit and then this gets the 2% commission applied = £0.2058 (Probably rounded up to 2 dp to still equal £0.21)
OR
B. The £0.63 win first gets the 2% commission applied making it 0.6174 then the £0.42 is taken off = £0.1974 (Probably rounded up to 2 dp to equal £0.20) ?
To add a question to the above does ordering of the round up to 2 dp happen per bet or when the total is calculated across the markets?
For my automation the P/L recordings have been out by around 20p to 30p over a days load of races so I know I am doing something wrong somewhere (I compare my final P/L total to the same total in the app). Some people would say big deal, but my P/L is part of my conditions so it's important to me.
A question about Commission over multiple markets

The win and place markets are separate markets and treated as such. You would pay commission rounded to the nearest penny based on the P&L of each separate winning market.
Australian markets will charge a significantly higher commission%.
Bet Angel P&L doesn't always exactly match the final P&L paid by Betfair. Not sure why this is.

Hi jamesedwards
To follow up on this, I have compared my P/L on Guardian to the P/L in the Betfair App today and the P/L in the Betfair App is different by £0.65
One first thing I have noticed is that odds have been different between Guardian and the Betfair App and after looking into this, I believe Dallas said to be actually signed into my Betfair Account when using Automation to stop odds difference (if I have got that right) - So I shall start doing that.
Apart from the odds differing from time to time, there are discrepancy examples that I can't get my head around and I just want to make sure that I am not doing anything wrong my side (just so I can be as accurate as can be) I have some examples below
First example:
That's odds of 1.74
A stake of 0.57
(0.42 is the liability)
On the Betfair App It says my profit is 0.57 !
But how can that be?
The raw winnings before commission is £0.57 , then multiplied by 0.98 (which charges the 2% commission) is actually 0.5586 which when rounded up to 2 dp is £0.56 ! (which is what Guardian says)
Second example:
On the Betfair App It says my profit is 0.75 !
How though?
((4 * 0.25) - 0.25) = 0.75 which is the raw winnings before commission being charged, then multiplied by 0.98 is actually 0.735 rounded up to 2 dp is 0.74 ! (again what Guardian says)

The 'exchange bets' page doesn't show paid commission.smgreyuk wrote: ↑Mon Apr 21, 2025 11:22 pmHi jamesedwards

If you use the 'Exchange profit and loss' page the P&L will include a commission deduction.
For my outcomes, either:
1. A back bet on the Win Market wins, whilst a lay bet on the Place Market loses (in this case I have it configured so the profit from the win market exceeds the loss from the Place market in terms of odds and stakes)
2. A back bet on the Win Market loses, whilst a lay bet on the Place Market wins (Again in this case I have it configured so the profit from the Place market exceeds the loss from the Win market in terms of odds and stakes)
3. Both the back bet on the Win Market and lay bet on the Place Market loses
So for outcomes 1 and 2, there is an overall profit on the event but calculated over two markets within the event.
So I wonder if no commission is ever applied as there always at least one loss on one of the markets within an event perhaps?

I realised the issue and edited my previous post while you were typing.smgreyuk wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 12:02 amFor my outcomes, either:

The 'exchange bets' page doesn't show paid commission.

Ah I have just read your changed reply.
Got you, I have been looking at the exchange bets page.
And yes, when I look one the Profit and Loss page the commission is actually applied.
So to sum up (excuse the pun) I was looking on a page that excluded the commission, and I didn't know that was the case.
Thank you jamesedwards
