what's with two big orders in sync on two different horses?

I'm not sure how often this happens, as I only get to trade now and again, but I've noticed recently a big move pre-race on the fav and 2nd fav at the same time as big orders come in timed to perfection on the first two horses. Does anyone know what purpose this serves - is it a trader making a calculated trade or a bookie settling the books? Curious (and sometimes out of pocket as a result) - cheers if you can shed some light on this.

IMO, this is the result of larger corporate players - the bookies, using these bets to either settle their liabilities or influence market direction. I am thinking a bit of both on ocassion. Invariably, I have found that such bets will have the effect of exhausting a trend and resulting in the market reversing in the opposite direction. If not open eyed to such events and abnormal volume spikes, I have found myself on the end of some of my biggest losses.
