Let's say in the next 5-10 years, the model of betting dependency for horse/greyhound racing collapses. Levy schemes, media rights, advertising revenues/sponsorships are no longer. What would still survive on-line/off-line?
First answer, maybe not much. Assuming the government of the day won't step in, reckon more tracks will close resulting in a Hong Kong style set up, with maybe Tote betting on-course, being revived in some form. Attendance will be more important, as long as it's cost effective and the racegoer gets a good experience for their day out.
The betting aspect may be kept under control with a pre-loaded budget card, that has gone through all the financial checks, and can be used on the Tote or spent on the racecourse. If can only be topped up after further pre-checks set up by the gambling commission and banks.
Greyhound racing would be set up in a similar way, maybe a couple more like the Wolverhampton one, that will be set within the confines of an existing racecourse. (All Weather)
Betting shops would all close. They would likely need a casino licence for each shop to maintain the FOBT's, and that ain't cheap. Sports books might open in existing casinos, but be strongly regulated.
As it looks as though it's heading towards a more dystopian future, I asked GPT to brainstorm some ideas on what it might morph into.
- Fantasy Racing Leagues: Users build stables, choose line-ups, earn points based on performances. Could be monetized without gambling (subscriptions, in-game purchases).
E.Sports-style Virtual Racing: Digitally recreate famous races or AI-run leagues. Could be streamed and spectated globally.
Augmented Reality at Tracks: Make the live event like a theme park experience — interactive screens, AR glasses showing horse data, trainer interviews on-demand.
Racing as Mindfulness: Watch majestic animals run for joy. Embrace the Zen of the gallop. Could be marketed alongside retreats, yoga classes, and ethical farming.
Cultural Preservation: Governments or non-profits fund it as a heritage sport, like falconry or cheese rolling. Minimal revenue, but enough to keep the lights on
