This has been by far and away the best forum I've ever used, but it's finally time to say goodbye now, having been given a matter of weeks to live.

I've made some good friends on this forum which I regret not meeting and also made some of my very best enemies.

You can imagine how hard it was when I was unable to drink water, especially alcohol. But today I didn't give a fuck about that. I just wanted to sit in the 30 degrees and enjoy a refreshing cool fizzy drink. So my advice to anyone is don't take life's pleasures for granted. Next time you have a really nice meal over a glass of wine, savour every bite and sip. :)

So sorry to hear this Derek.

Brave and pertinent words you speak.

Wishing the weeks ahead are as comfortable as possible.

Sad news...

Will miss your entertaining takes on life, particularly the energy saving endeavours.

Will raise a glass & think of you next time I have a some wine (or a McD)...

But in traditional Glasgow humour "What's your shoe size?"

I can't read your post as you are on my ignore list, Derek.

But goodbye, and I hope you also fare well.

Awful news Derek, we never chatted much but I was always on the sidelines watching your arguments unfold :D

A nice chorus for you there.

Derek it has been a pleasure to follow you on here.
We never particularly interacted much, I'd envisage a clash of personalities but I had a shit-ton of respect for you.

Enjoy the remainder, be "you", and everything you love in life, just enjoy life.

This is a really tough post to read. It hits differently when someone shares something so personal about their health, especially the part about only having weeks left.

Your advice about not taking the simple things for granted like enjoying a cold drink when it's hot or really savoring a good meal, that's something we all need to hear more often. It's so easy to just rush through life and forget to appreciate those basic pleasures. Perhaps that's the ultimate lesson, isn't it? That the profound often lies hidden in the utterly ordinary, waiting for us to truly notice.

You've definitely made your presence known on this forum, for better or worse, and you've clearly left an impression on a lot of people here.

Wishing you peace.

As Derek has been absent for some time, I feared the worst. But it's still tough news to take.

Let us know if there is anything we can do for you.
So my advice to anyone is don't take life's pleasures for granted
A reminder of what is really important in life.

In poker parlance, Derek, Good Game Sir.

Thanks for generously sharing your invaluable knowledge (Poisson Distribution Excel) and insightful perspectives (Tomatoes). Whilst not always in agreement, you say Tomato and I say Tomata, there was always something learned.

Enjoy as much time as you can with your family and we'll all see you again, in the traders sky, in future years to come.

I don't post a lot but read everything very regularly.

I have read many of your posts Derek and it is clear to me that you are a thick skinned and very decent man.

The world could learn a lot of good lessons from you.

I'm not sad about Derek.
If you look at it from a pure communication perspective, in the near future we'll have millions of ai generated Dereks, Peters, Shauns, Kais, Peters and others.
If you look at it from a existential perspective, deterministically saying, we all (and everythiing) are just a bunch of not-yet scientifically determined particles, that interact with each other like one huge mechanism. Our consciousness is a byproduct of that interaction -a "movie", a "play". "What, is this the ending already? Are the credits about to roll?" "Ok, fine. Pretty trivial story, anyway."
I'll remeber this "...Next time you have a really nice meal over a glass of wine, savour every bite and sip.", Derek.
I'm not sad...
