I tried to direct message someone about a post I was interested in but wasn't able to, apparently I need to contribute more to discussions before this feature is enabled.

I would really appreciate if someone could please let me know what the specific requirements are to enable this feature.

It's an anti-spam process. We are plagued all across the site with spam messages. So you can't just register and start contacting others via DM.
