Help with History Lists

Trying to get my head around 'History Lists'. Found useful information on how to store data in a history list but nothing about how to retrieve it.
Are there any example .baf files I could look at to see how to do it. Or forum posts that expalin it. Video perhaps?
Here's an example of the sort of thing I would like to be able to do. (This is not meant to be a viable strategy in any way just a means to me understanding the principle)
Store the back price of a selection into a history list at intervals of 5s in play (can do that ok)
Retrieve the latest 5 entries and produce an average. (not sure how to do this)
