I am curious to know when people close their trades before the off?
Twice now, I have seen my profit, wiped out with very sudden price movements just minutes before the off.
Closing before the off..
anything from 10 secs before advertised off up to 29 secs after offical off( depending on how confident i am they will go off later than 30 secs).
all evening races 10 secs before offical and most irish races 10 secs before the offical off(depending on how liquid they are and in my confidence they will go off later)
also the first 2 races on a card 10 secs before the offical off.
obviously if they are delayed for whatever reason, i play by ear wearing a belt and braces

Do you have live pictures ?
Often without you can get caught out if a horse starts playing up going in to the stalls and a big odds movement happens. and also it's easier to tell how long there is to go before the off.
Adam Heathcote wrote the following in his blog (http://adamheathcote.blogspot.com/2009/ ... oints.html):
Be careful with about a minute to go before the race is due off. A fair number of people will be exiting their positions and in my experience it's harder to predict. I also find that trends will usually come to an end with about a minute to go as the markets find an equilibrium; so if you backed a horse going down, then would be a good exit point if it's been a constant steamer, the same goes for drifters.

I think I would generally agree with that. Many reasons for the price to jump suddenly near the off including a horse playing up or something similar.
My exit is generally dictated by how the market is going. If I am doing well I may push it right to the off, knowing I have some spare room below me. If it is going badly then I may try and squeak the last drop out of something. Inbetween and I will probably exit slightly earlier happy to have got something out of it.
