Im trying to asses as to whether I need a faster internet connection or computer. When placing bets into the ladder it typically takes around 3-5 seconds to appear on a ladder for in play markets. Is this an average time or does anyone get instant placings on the ladder?. Obviously this also depends on how active the market is that you are trading. In the timings I have quoted these are based on what I would call busy heavily traded markets in play.

betfair impose a time delay for bet placement inplay.
if you place a bet before the off it should appear on the ladder instantly, if not then you may have a problem. if you place a bet inplay there will be a delay of x secs depending on what market your betting into.
