Taking profit... or not! what did I do wrong??

Eurovision- 1) I backed Denmark in running at 40s, their price dipped to 18s so wanted to get out.
I clicked on 'close trade' button which froze at a green figure.
2) I had backed UK at 20s, when their price dipped to 6s I wanted to get out, repeated same process as above but when I check account, nothing.
I'm annoyed coz it would of been two nice pick-ups.

When the price came in was there money on the lay side to allow you to get out?
You should check your log, it will tell you what happened to the bet, matched - unmatched - part matched.

Log's not showing anything at all about anything (!?)but it seems I have misunderstood the mechanics of how it works.
I assumed that if I looked to get out, then the position would be closed at best available price i.e. if not enough at 'X' price, it would move onto 'Y' etc until the trade was closed.
With there evidently not being enough for me to get out, why did the trade profit amount freeze up?
As I couldn't get out at the time, I assumed it would stay available so I could decide whether to get out at a later time.
