What is the reason ATR live pics are so far behind?

Is this because they get their pics via a internet link as opposed to getting beam back via satelite.
Or another technical reason?

It will depend on the money they spend to get the satellite pictures distributed to clients.

Some providers will have a production unit on site so all the editing, overlays etc are done there. They then beam that feed up to a satellite (adds delay) beam it down to an earth station (adds a delay) beam it up to a domestic TV provider (another delay) beam it into your home (another delay).

The more uploads and downloads you make the more the delay will be.

As At The Adverts are real cheapskates I am sure they use cheap systems with 3rd party production services that require lots of relays.

I did measure this before and here are the approx times. They may have changed in the past few years so someone may have new figures??

These are the typical delay between live on course action and what you see on a TV screen.

Closed Loop Feed at Course = 0s
Old terrestrial TV = ~0.3-0.5s
Turf TV (Bookies only or Trading Room) = ~2.5s
SiS/SiS+ (At Home service, Bookies or Trading Room) = ~3.5s
RUK = ~4.0-4.5s
ATR = ~6.0-6.5s

These are just a guide and as I said, it is a few years since I did the research so they may have changed. From what I have been hearing ATR are getting worse!!

Thanks Jolly that's pretty much what i assumed without knowing the details.
When you think about betfair video is a second quicker than ATR. They obviously have to redistribute the pics via their systems and it still better than a TV company. Shame on them.

Hi JG - Hope you're well.
Just looking at this old post...does every course have a closed loop system??

Yes, but watching it can be a different story. In most courses I have visited there is a closed loop feed but it usually restricted to hospitality or staff areas. If you go into the Tote shop at the course they generally show the standard TV pictures from SiS or Turf TV so they will have the delays.

Why do you ask?

BTW - my health has taken a real nosedive! I have a rare disease that cannot be cured. It isn't life threatening as such but the symptoms are a real ********

hi mate sorry to hear about your health. hope things are not too uncomfortable for you and your family. Ill catch up with you offline.

the reason I was asking about closed loop was mainly because of the final trades that are placed just prior to the finish. I expect that they have always been there from day one, but they just seem to be more prevalent these days. Click on the graph of any winner and you will see the 5k to 10k+ trades flying in in the final closing stages. in the past I was grateful for these trades as xm enabled me to take advantage but xm doesn't have the same characteristics that it had in the early part of last year. I was just wondering if there was more on track activity these days than there was this time last year?

I hope to get the opportunity next week to visit a trading room that has both turf and SIS and will see with my own eyes how it works, but I woul also love to visit a course and try a semi automated system. just looking to explore new avenues really, nothing ventured...nothing gained
If there are any regular manual in running traders reading, any guidance appreciated. thanks
regards

Peter

On course trading is big business these days and the numbers of have definitely increased! There is a small close knit group that frequent the courses and they seem to squire all the spare seats and hospitality boxes.

They are all using closed loop feeds so they see everything before anyone using domestic or commercial TV feeds.

ATR is pants fact.... anyone know why the RUK online feed is not working today??? i'd ask them myself but if your an online customer there is only an email for support. must be why its 5 quid cheaper a month, or an even bigger delay than sky, oh and poorer quality picture... if you cant have where you live tho it's better than BF live video.

I contacted ATR few months ago and they said their pictures were live and suggested I speak to the distributor - I was with Virgin Media; contacted Virgin who admitted blame and suggested the delay was due to e number of channels available?
I find that Betfair pictures are the quickest, although not always that reliable.

Got the chance to visit a trading room yesterday. Interesting day.
Although it didn't appear to have as big an edge as I thought, there is a slight edge and maybe that is enough?
The two guys I met (Simon and Colin) were very helpful, nice guys and I will definitely go again when I have had time to reflect and think how I could make it work for me.
The trading room is in Nelson (near Burnley) and I would be happy to put you in contact with one of the lads above alternatively contact member "thewald" on here
Thanks

Even if you have completely live pictures, what I struggle to understand his how people can know what the true price of a horse is at any given time. You're basically talking about handicapping based on instinct, given that you don't have time to think - by the time you've weighed up the odds the situation has changed.

Would I be correct in thinking that the way to profit in in-play running is when the market has clearly screwed up - for example, when a horse has gone odds on, but there are still other horses in the frame with a decent shout?
