Is there something in the rule book that says you need a bright orange pole at the start to get a race underway. That's a new one on me!

Ridiculous some of the things you see watching racing. They could compile a comedy DVD for xmas

You do need them but not where they had them. If you look after the start of a flat race they always have the poles, it marks the point at which the jocks are allowed to move off of a straight line.
