Firstly I want to pay tribute to the young lady (Clair Squires) who lost her life raising money by running the London Marathon. I feel for her loved ones and the pain they must be feeling right now.

In light of this, and the 10 other runners who have lost their lives running this "race". Is it time for the organisers to make the race "safer" or ban it altogether?
My point is in all sport there are risks to life.
Why are the do gooders that want the GN banned quite now about the London Marathon? Is equine life worth more than human life?

Marathon running is cruel and should be banned. They force these poor humans to run till they are exhausted and they also force them to beg people for money. It's in human, barbaric and shouldn't be going on in this day and age.

Clair Squires lost her life running the London Marathon. She was only 30.

I consider that your words were inappropriate and in poor taste.

I am disgusted.

I'm sorry you misinterpreted it, it was a light hearted jibe at the racing community, not a real comment on marathon running. I used to do a lot of long distance running and witnessed two deaths first hand. I tried to help on one of those occasions as the person collapsed right in front of me and no medic was nearby. I wouldn't wish ill will or bad taste on anybody, so I apologise if you didn't understand the or take it in the context in which it was meant. If you are really that offended then I will remove it, but please read it in context.

On a formal note, I did some work a while ago investigating deaths in marathons. While there is probably an increase in the likelyhood of medical issues brought on by the excertion of running a marathon, given the number of runners, there wasn't any massive statistically significant increase in deaths. Each one though is very sad, especially when somebody was running for the benefit of others.

The difference being that people choose to do the marathon, but horses don't choose to run the National

I saw some stats earlier, that the majority of runners who have died in the London Marathon, most of them had undiagnosed heart problems. So, they would have died from exertion elsewhere, albeit not on that day

One killer related particularly to long distance running is over hydration. These days the marketing etc behind the drinks industry is huge and give imo the wrong information/impression.

The amount of fluids you see some people run with is crazy. Also some of the articles you read give crazy information on the amounts you should be drinking, one such case being in the Comrades marathon a few years ago which when the lead doctor saw it he was far from impressed!
