I was watching the 15:30 at Redcar on BetAngel today and for the first time in my brief Betfair career noticed what appeared to be market manipulation.

On the lay side a couple of pips away there sat a large sum of "money" at least 4 times the amount at any other price. This made the WOM heavily weighted to the "blue" side. Then suddenly it would disappear instantly shifting WOM to the other side. The "money" would then reappear a short while later. This was repeated several times and although it did not always immediately affect prices, sometimes when it was withdrawn there was an instant move of several pips.

I looked like someone was winding up an elastic band and letting it go when he felt it was ready to snap.

Here's a screen shot of the WOM chart, each sharp point in the blue line is when the money was suddenly withdrawn followed by its reintroduction.

Something I thought other newbies might benefit from seeing this. Something to keep an eye out for perhaps.

Thanks for info.
Did you manage to exploit it?

If you watch some races you will note around the 1.01 mark, massive figures appear also within a few minutes before the off. As a newbie myself I have assumed that they are hoping some prat matches them by mistake. I cant see what else they are hoping for, as it does not seem to affect the market? umh I suppose you and me both will one day find out.

They are hoping some prat will matched them
but in-play rather than pre race :)

it is actually a goldmine if you can get yourself near the front of queue, but that's the hard part ;) .

The people doing it in the last few mins as you observed may struggle and only get matched om the winners.

There is thread somewhere on the forum called 'Farical' which has lots of examples of manipulation.

I think some traders are starting to use WOM triggers as a crafty ploy (I've even done it myself)

So many people are now using bots, or some form of API automation, and WOM often appears to be one of the things the bot is looking for. Therefore, it's becoming easier & easier to trick them into making bad decisions

Typing in this search-text doesn't find a topic. I'm really curious about this topic.
