This is a good site, I learnt a similar technique when I was young and it worked wonders for me. I think this site does a good job of bringing this into the modern age. I used phonetics to contrust images, so this is a decent alternative.

Learn Chinese in one weekend
There used to be a well known memory course by a Hungarian lecturer Dr Bruno Furst, that was available by mail order (pre-internet days)
A friend of mine had it, and it was pretty good. He'd translate words into numbers and it was all about imagination and Mnemonics. I tried it briefly and even got to the point where I could flick through a magazine and then recall something from every page, not just in order, but by individual page number.

Perfectly good resourses out there that do the same thing nowadays. Tozy Buzan's books or variants of are just as good. This web site I opened this link with pretty much uses the same technique.

thanks, I was just trying to test Le Tiss if the course actually worked!
Yes, it did. I never had access to it permanently though, so I never continued with it. Also, the person who had it moved on & I lost contact, so I have no idea to what extent he developed it.
I don't know if Peter's other suggestions work the same way, but Bruno Furst turned all letters into numbers 0-9. There was a reasoning behind why each letter had a specific number(I can't remember the guidelines though!! LOL) and therefore he could translate any word into a number and vica-versa. Once you had mastered this number code you could then develop a series of mental pictures to remember great feats. Like I said before, I reached a point fairly quickly where I could skim through a chunky magazine of 80 odd pages, for 1 second pick something out on the page and then associate that subject with my mental picture for that specific page number. I could then remember what was on page 23 or page 52. It worked, I wish I could have continued with it actually. I think there were 12 sessions and I only reached number 2 or 3
