Less than a fortnight after he suggested that he still hoped to return to Channel 4 Racing, John McCririck burned his bridges with the station on Wednesday when he announced that he is to sue both the broadcaster and the producer of its racing coverage for a total of £3m in lost earnings and punitive damages.

I also heard that part of the £3m (not sure how much) if successful will be donated away to various charities within Racing and charities who fight ageism?

I'd love to see how McCririck tries to prove that he was sacked due to ageism and not because he's an irascible, misogynist dinosaur with a frankly surreal dress sense.

Anyway, I don't see why it should be any of the law's business if a broadcaster feels that a younger presenter would appeal more to its demographic, if that's what happened. It's a bit like an aftershave company saying they want a man in his 20s for their ad campaign, not an octogenarian...

As for the £3 million he's after, I don't know what Channel 4 racing presenters get paid these days, but I doubt he'd make anything like that if he'd kept his job and lived to be 100! In the Wife Swap programme, Edwina Currie commented that her kitchen was bigger than Big Mac's house, so he's probably not on big money!

£500K for earnings and £2.5M punitive damages, Jeff. I imagine it'll be more based on employment law rather ageism but employment law just doesn't grab the headlines that well.

He's been continually employed by channel 4 for 29 years on a rolling contract so it's possible he'll have a decent case. McCririck's such a greedy sod I'd guess he had any payments made thru a close company to reduce taxes so that could scupper things for him anyway. Probably settled out of court with all parties saying how happy they are :)

No wonder youth unemployment is such a huge problem. The greedy bastard should be grateful he is still alive at 73 and enjoy what time he has left. If he had spent 50 years doing a proper job like grafting in a factory or building site I am pretty sure he would be very grateful of some retirement.

If he is such an "expert" why doesn't he bet for a living and if he is still bored, use his celebrity to raise money for good causes within racing?
It's nothing to do with age, and everything to do with his over bearing personality and boorish behaviour.

I met him once at Newmarket when the cameras were not rolling. Not a nice man IMHO.

There are 2 1/2 million people out of work in Britain & countless others on zero hours contracts, short time/ part time and very low paid jobs. If everyone is allowed to work until they die what chance have the younger generations with families got? How are our kids going to have the opportunities we had? Such as a chance to buy a house maybe?

I was with my young Daughter and she wanted his autograph, he waved her away like she was a turd beneath his shoe.

My two pennies on the subject.

I have never liked Big Mac and have posted accordingly on here.

I have met him several times and he was an obnoxious oaf on each occasion. The one time I had an expensive Cuban cigar for him but when I approached him he behaved just as Mugsgame described. He waved me away like I was a bad smell. I showed him the cigar and suddenly he changed his behaviour. That didn't work and I assured him the only experience of the cigar he was likely to get was when I shoved it where the sun doesn't shine. His face drained white and he scuttled away.

Ironically I think he could well win this case because none of the replacements has his experience and let's face it none of them has provided anything better. If I am honest C4's coverage of racing is a total joke and I wouldn't pay any of the current mob with washers!

Rant over!!

Fat old wanker

I met him in 1991. I was a young lad and he had been paid £500 by Ladbrokes to open a new betting shop - I was the manager. He spent the whole day ignoring customers, whilst stuffing his face with minature sausage rolls and trying to shag our 21 year-old cashier, which is not easy when you look like a sweating walrus in fancy dress

If he does win they will probably have to pay Tommo and Lesley Graham compensation as well?

I must be the only one! I hope he wins his case and gets back on C4; its been like Blue Peter since he was sacked and I miss his OTT comments. Life would be very beige without the likes of McCririck appearing on our screens..

I loved this (Wiki)

"After failing to get into the diplomatic service, he was briefly a waiter at The Dorchester hotel"

James, he will never be back whatever happens. I was a senior union rep once and was a constant thorn in the side of the factory director. He sat me down and told me he was going to sack me. I said well it's going to cost you a lot of money in wrongful dismissal. He said "I don't care if it costs me £100k. The satisfaction of knowing you won't be working here will be worth ever penny".

Think the same applies here. Anyway, no chance whatsoever of him winning.
