The machines average profits of around £50,000 each a year - £200,000 per shop.'

All the ones I walk past seem to be empty. I remember the days you could hardly get through the door, especially when the pubs closed at 3 the bookies were packed.

I started my career as a Ladbrokes betting shop manager, so I have some great memories from my shop days.

I sometimes worked in a shop in St Mary's Southampton. It forms part of the red light area, and in the 90's (pre-internet) prostitution was rife down there. We used to get working girls come in the shop looking for punters who wanted to celebrate a winner with a quick leg over!
