As a newbie I'm now feeling my way around in Professional mode with small 2 euro bets - I need to feel the pain!
I notice that sometimes, maybe to keep things moving along, Betfair adds a fraction to my bets, so far always on the lay side. For example, today I backed a horse for 8 euro, but on the lay side Betfair made it 8.38. I just want to know if this is common or can it be avoided?

If you ask for a price when backing but there is money available at a higher price then Betfair will match at the better price. If there are a few cents at the higher price it will part match at the higher price before filling at your requested price.

Yes, as 6th sense said. Betfair bumps to the highest price.
As a sidenote, for me, this is one of betfair's con jobs. Basically it forces buyers nearer to losing positions. You can't order a position at 3.0 (say) but only at that price, and reject buys above that price.
In financial exchanges you can match at exact prices anywhere you like.
