Hi everyone.

How can I tell if a market is going to be available in play? Last night I was going to trade the Unders on the Fulham v Wolves match as I was confident of a low scoring affair. I was just about to place a back bet as the match kicked off, the market was suspended and that was the end of that. It was the biggest game in England last night with plenty of liquidity - over £200k traded on match odds before k.o. - so I thought it would be available in play.

Try placing a back or lay that won't get matched - eg. back @ 1000 or lay @ 1.01. Then click 'Keep All' and see if the 'At In-Play' status changes.

just go to the betfair web page ,
click on football,
at the bottom of the list there is an option to click ,its labeled MORE IN PLAY FOOTBALL,when you click on this it changes and all the games that appear are in play,
another way to know is if you look at the top of the market there are little buttons, there is a grey one if its ticked.the market is going in play.
also be aware that when betfair lose the feed for a market it will be suspended.

'Technical reasons'

Betfair use Running ball I think to provide a feed to the game. Basically this is a guy, often a student, who sits at the match and reports back what's happening.

When he doesn't turn up then there is your 'technical' reason for a failure to turn a match in play.

Just another example of BF's shit service

The CL matches at Bratislava & Standard were also 35mins late going 'in play'

Thanks all for the prompt and informative replies. Will know where to check in future. Guess I just thought wrongly that match would be designated to go in play. As I said, never assume.

Probably a silly question, but do you think the people working at running ball are clever enough to make a lot of money from BF, or are they to honest?

I remember you said before Peter the SIS (or whatever the people that provide pictures of the horses) camera man was probably bf first millionaire.

As Francis Urquhart used to say, "You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment." ;)
