I imagine that most people who do make it pay would be just as profitable, or probably more profitable if they just did a straight back on the selection and didnt bother with the lay.
The problem with the majority of B2L'ers is that they put all the effort into picking the front runner, then sloppily throw away any value they may have obtained to the on-course guys with an ill thought out lay usually at half the odds. So effectively they've gone to a lot of effort just to get themselves an even money shot at best.

That's right, there was a really interesting feature about this on RUK the other day.. Can't for the life of me now remember the name of that stats guy they have on.

Apart from that...
There seems to be a lot of people trying to find 1 horse to B2L, all using the same stats services, and all fighting over the IP money. Let's not forget 15/16 of them are certain to be good for a profitable L2B. If you're lucky you don't even need to do the B bit. :)

Also on B2L, what I see a lot these days is front running horses who's price doesn't shorten when they lead, because they're expected to, or there's an army of people lay lay laying which holds the price up too.

You find a fancied hold-up horse, probably at a big price in running because it's at the back(? well derr) and as soon as it flares its nostrils and gains a place, the price crashes in because everyone thinks...here it comes!...usually doesn't even get 1/2 way through the pack but by then, who cares, job done.

To paraphrase what I said earlier, I wouldn't pay for a service just for them to tell me who's got their nose over the start line and who's at the back still playing with their goggles.

So we keep trying for the 3rd and it might even bring a 4th with it....oh here's a bear, leg chewed off and apples gone! Could have settled for the 2 apples but wanted more. Same with the 2 quid becoming 3 or possibly 4, only the bear in this case is your horse getting bumped on the bend, a bad jump, jockey losing his whip etc.
My problem used to be running away with 2 apples when there's no reason not to stay and get a third, or hanging around waiting for 1 apple to arrive.. right up until the bear comes along.
