On a more serious note - reading the twitter feed from Euler's original post - it's sad to see so much hate going on. From what others have said - it was a mistake.

A silly mistake, but if everyone who has made a mistake left the forum...

That hate is from losing punters who no doubt placed huge amounts on a guaranteed winner. If the horse fell, or was genuinally caught on the line, fair enough, but when something like that happens, it's guaranteed to send some over the edge

Imagine having a liability (maybe not all one person) of £197,000 just to win 0.1% of that :?

This is why gambling has such a poor reputation, happens in other sports too: -

It's also a bigger issue I have about how people treat life. There seems to be no sense of personal responsibility for decisions that people make. When I screw up I take it on the chin and move on, but it seems this is a rare thing to do. But as Kahneman pointed out this seems to a typically human trait.

OMG. That's exactly the problem. "Send some over the edge" ????? If you're gambling on something with variables (Horse, rider, rabbits running across the course) then you should expect that things like do happen, and accept it. None of us like to lose money, but it's the hate that erupts from some people that bothers me. If a 1000 people moan on twitter, then there will probably be one or two people who go further, find the jockey and send threatening emails. That sort of thing affects people.

Why is it ok if the horse fell, but not if the rider makes a mistake? Horse fall because a number of reasons. It's not just a fluke of nature. They were pushed by the mistake of another horse/rider or the horse makes a mistake or the rider makes a mistake. It may have been a "daft" mistake, but it's an awful symptom of society where it's acceptable to go "over the edge" in reacting to this sort of thing.

Of course it is human trait. That's why numerous revenge porn websites were born, people wanting to get ultimate revenge for being rejected. As we've seen with terrorism, a handful of exceptionally angry individuals will always get themselves noticed ahead of the silent majority

That's good, because you're confrontational enough when you're winning

I just assumed you'd be walking around your house last night, like Jack Nicholson with his axe at The Overview Hotel

The way I look at it. If you have lost a lot of money from this race you are a) either very shrewd and making a lot of money anywayor b) a complete idiot who bets on everything.

If your prepared to lose so much money on an amateurs race it's your own fault and should know the risks.

It's a very bad mistake but it's just a horse race at the end of the day.

Whilst i'm sure there were some track players who got badly hurt yesterday, im sure there are plenty of others who made an absolute killing.

Who do you think was the first to see that he had eased down too soon?

Strangely enough, I actually laid the horse and had to get out again pretty quick for a small loss and was feeling pretty smug with myself for limiting my liabilities... until the finish unfolded.

Some felt pain and some felt gain... that's life.
