what is survival analysis in terms of football ? > it is the ability of a team to hold onto a lead / recover from a deficit > what I am going to show you below is

1. New York RB 0-1 at 20 minutes elapsed data < in general you will see acceleration of goal production

2. I am also going to show you 0-1 HT MLS data with the opening goal in the 0-20 minutes time band added to the home fightback in the 46-70 minutes time band ( 1-1 ) and you will see in general lowered expectation of a draw because 1-1 FT in that profile in MLS is a rare event

key points to consider >

1. how did the opening goal in the game effect expectation of accuracy for the rest of the game ?

2. how does the 2nd half fightback metric ( > 1-1 with the 2nd goal 46-70 minutes ) in an individual league effect expectation of a game ending a draw ?

above is last 28 games in the MLS where New York RB were at home and it was 0-1 with 19 minutes elapsed >

11-5-12 < your focus on the sample of 28 games should be that there was only 5/28 that ended a draw < the reason is 2 fold <

1. expectation of acceleration of goal production as a result of the early away goal metric in the MLS

2. 0-1 Half Time MLS added to the early away goal metric and a draw is not common < if the games go to > 1-1 pathway with the 2nd goal in the 46-70 time band then in general 1-1 FT will be a rare event

68% ended over 2.5 goals = 1.47 >

54% ended over 3.5 goals = 4/5

we can now look at 0-1 half time in the MLS added to the opening goal in the 0-20 minutes time band added to the home fightback in the 2nd half > 1-1 with the 2nd goal in the 46-70 minutes time band < you will see that 1-1 FT is a rare event which you can exploit by laying the draw at 1-1 / backing over 2.5 goals and then at 2-1/1-2 trading out of the DRAW

If we look above at the last 30 games in MLS 0-1 HT added to the early away goal metric ( opening goal in 0-20 minutes time band ) and the home fightback in the 46-70 minutes time band >

80% ended over 2.5 goals

15-11-4 <

Using Survival Analysis to make in play Soccer Betting Decisions

Posted on: September 16th, 2016 by Jonny Grossmark
Survival analysis is generally defined as a set of methods for analyzing data where the outcome variable is the time until the occurrence of an event of interest. The event can be death, occurrence of a disease, marriage, divorce, etc.

If we look at Survival analysis in terms of Soccer the question we need to ask is how likely are a team to a hold a lead ?

“Survival Analysis of the Timing of Goals in Soccer Games”

Conclusion

” teams score more goals when they are being led but fewer goals when they are leading,”

opta pro Forum 2015

Conclusion

” teams score more goals when they are being led but fewer goals when they are leading,”

If the above conclusion is correct then in effect there is no in play betting edge because in play market prices would be spot on in terms of expectation of the other team fighting back .

Nape response >

I looked at the effect of the time of the opening goal with attention to the early goal which I define as the opening goal by the home team 0-10 minutes / opening goal by the away team 0-20 minutes in individual leagues added to the major half time game states ( 1-0 /0-1 1-1 0-1 ) to understand if teams that are leading are likely to face a fightback from the other team .

Many football betting blogs will discuss the strength of teams but I have never seen any other blogs looking to see if there may be variables in play that can weaken the perceived strength of a team .

For example if we look at Manchester City in the League when losing 1-0 at half time AWAY , they last one a game in that profile in 1992

Manchester City away in the Premier league since 2008-2009 when losing 1-0 half time >

0 1415 2015-04-06 Crystal Palace Man City 1-0 2-1
E0 1415 2014-10-25 West Ham Man City 1-0 2-1
E0 1314 2013-11-10 Sunderland Man City 1-0 1-0

E0 1011 2011-02-12 Man United Man City 1-0 2-1
E0 1011 2011-01-22 Aston Villa Man City 1-0 1-0
E0 0910 2010-03-14 Sunderland Man City 1-0 1-1
E0 0910 2010-02-06 Hull Man City 1-0 2-1
E0 0910 2009-12-16 Tottenham Man City 1-0 3-0
E0 0910 2009-10-18 Wigan Man City 1-0 1-1
E0 0910 2009-10-05 Aston Villa Man City 1-0 1-1

E0 0809 2009-01-31 Stoke Man City 1-0 1-0
E0 0809 2008-12-28 Blackburn Man City 1-0 2-2

In the majority of the above games , the betting industry and the in play punters had some expectation of Manchester City fighting back > why ? < well <

they are seduced by >

” teams score more goals when they are being led but fewer goals when they are leading,”

We can look at Survival analysis in Soccer on a league level by looking at the early goal and expectation of the game going to 1-1 or 0-2 /2-0 or staying at 1-0.

In the Premier League last season in games where the home team opened the scoring 0-10 minutes ,

GAME PATHWAY

3/41 1-0 FT

26/41 > 2-0 24-2-0 <> home teams won 92%

12/41 > 1-1 5-4-3 home teams won 42%

We can see from above that the pathway > 2-0 is more likely then > 1-1 .

If we look at the pathway in ligue 2 in games where the away team open the scoring 0-20 last season ;

GAME PATHWAY

8/59 0-1 FT

36/59 > 1-1 15-16-5 <> away team won 14%

15/59 > 0-2 0-3-12 <> away team won 80%

and we can see that the team that concede are more likely to score the 2nd goal

Summary

If you look at individual leagues around the globe added to the time of the opening goal and the game state ( current score ) you will find which has been noted in several blogs that the team that concedes will have more shots , but they failed to notice that the shots in general will be of a low accuracy Wall which is one reason why a team does not always score more goals when they are behind and the other main reason which has never been developed is that the perceived strength of a team can be weakened by variables that may occur such as the game state ( current score )
footnote : the away team opening the scoring late in a game is more likely to score the 2nd goal then > 1-1 pathway

“In this masterwork Pullein explains how you can work out what is likely to happen …. Kevin Pullein is the leading football commentator for the Racing Post. … for instance, a team which is losing by 0-1 is 6% more likely to score the next goal “

the above comment is flawed if you look at the time of the opening goal in an individual league < you can exploit this by betting on the next goal in running > in games where the prices are out of line with expectation

The Effect of the Early Home goal and 1-1 Pathway in the First Half in the MLS

Posted on: March 26th, 2017 by Jonny Grossmark
If you have read the book The Numbers Game: Why Everything You Know About Football Is Wrong , you may have discovered that there were a number of errors in the book and one key theme that was offered ;

“TEAMS ARE NOT VULNERABLE WHEN THEY OPEN THE SCORING TO A QUICK RESPONSE” < the authors failed to understand that it is an early goal metric that is far more likely to produce a quick response so when they backed up their thought process with games in the Premier League that ended 1-1 at full time , your response would be to ask the % of early goal games that are likely to end 1-1 ?

In the table below I have added the last 35 games in MLS where the home team opened the scoring with a goal in the 0-10 minute time band and 43% produced a response T + 10 minutes or within T + 10 minutes of the opening goal. ( consider how many of the games ended 1-1 in that sample ? )

15-13-7 <> 37% ended a draw

86% ended over 2.5 goals, 63% ended over 3.5 goals and 26% ended over 4.5 goals

Summary

How does the time of the opening goal in an individual league effect expectation of the other team fighting back ? ( game pathway analysis )

In effect you should be looking to trade around the draw in games that produce an early goal metric and if we look at the table below , and you should consider backing against the draw ( laying the draw at 1-1 ) because of the lowered expectation of the games ending 1-1 , which would mean at 2-1/1-2 that you would trade out of your position on the draw to lock in a profit.

Sample size is the biggest red herring in football data and analysis .

I could produce a sample of 70 000 games that ended 1-1 at full time to show that teams are not vulnerable to a quick response but very few of the 70 000 games would include early goal games so that would be as useful as a chocolate teapot.

as a basic summary > football data and analysis is very weak and has not developed over the last 10 years +

expected goal totals analysis dominate the mainstream > this metric has been used for a number of years and is not a strong metric in terms of expectation of goal production as time decays in a game

one key point is that the betting industry dominate the flow of football data and analysis < the aim is to appeal to the lowest common denominator

I am hoping that the next generation of football data analysts will not be weakened by the power of the betting industry

I am over 50

a very interesting story < I had a meeting with a betting industry person who said " people are not interested in football analysis from middle aged men "

this is spot on < and this is why you see WALTER MITTY types creating characters on social media to give the inference that they are young and wealthy etc > e.g. Nape ( ANDY NAPIER ) >

key points > in this profile in the Championship

1. lowered expectation of the away team fighting back even though > 1-1 pathway is just as likely as > 2-0 pathway

2. expectation in general of acceleration of goal production

3.at 1-1 you have an excellent in play entry point in this profile in the Championship which would be backing the home team draw no bet at 1-1 with lowered expectation of the away team winning.

4. note the high BTTS YES % in this profile in the Championship

5. note the high % of goal(s) 80 + minutes > look to "net " the late goal(s)

6. in general a 2-0 lead is NOT PRECARIOUS
