Curley seeks advice over coup payments

BY GRAHAM GREEN 10:33AM 23 JUL 2010

BARNEY CURLEY is taking legal advice as he flexes his muscles to take on those bookmakers who have still not paid out following his spectacular betting coup of May 10.

Four horses, three trained by Curley, were combined in a string of multiples at big odds, and when three of them won many well-known firms were left facing massive payouts as the carefully orchestrated gamble cost the betting industry more than £1 million.

Although many operators have since settledin full, a number have not, and while a complaint has now been lodged with the Independent Betting Adjudication Service (IBAS) in respect of Sportingbet, which Curley claims owefriends of his more than £100,000, he is also keen to bring the non-payments to the attention of the Gambling Commission.

There was a big gamble that hosed up last night, can't remember the name or race but afterwards the commentator said there were connections back to Curley.

That's the one, how could I forget with a name like that? It moved a full 20%+ in the market and completely romped home by a country mile.

I think it is pretty bad that the bookies haven't paid out. I can't say I am much of a fan of what Barney does but as he has done nothing wrong in the eyes of the authorities I see no reason for them not to pay out. Had the horses lost they would have taken the money happily.

I agreed with Barney's views about the likes of Sporting Bet etc when he did an interview on RUK a few weeks back.

Also he seemed to indicate that he perhaps wasn't going to be looking to do many more gambles in the future and instead concentrate on his charity work which might be backed up by the fact he had that recent winner at Newmarket at about 50-1.

I must confess I only fully understood who the man is after this new multiple winner scheme. I digged the old story about him having a telephone busy at the track in the old times so that the bookies couldn't be warned and all the stuff...

I don't know how you see him, but isn't he a modern Robin Hood?
