Thinks it relates to how the prize money is collected for each race. (entry fees+sponsors+any other) ie; Handicap Stakes, Novice Stakes, Maiden Stakes etc..
Appreciated Fox. Yah, that's what confused me. Most races have "_____ Stks"; yet quite a few are just "Stks", maybe it's lazy Bf!!
When BF do that it usually refers to flat (not jumps) claiming and selling races. I suspect it isn't laziness; rather it's further demonstration of their ignorance of the product they deal in. Actually, all races are stakes races as stated above; it's just that handicaps aren't usually referred to in that manner. But it does happen occasionally.
Some good stakes races at Belmont tonight. ;)

Literally, all UK races are stakes, as in sweepstakes, just like human beings are animals. But generally speaking, handicaps are not stakes races, even the ones whos name ends in 'handicap stakes'.

Perhaps the ignorance lies not with Betfair but with whoever names the races?

Hi guys, been a observer of the forums for a few years now so finally signed up, curious just wanted to ask people's opinions on what style of markets do they like best considering the markets are forever changing from time to time? More like older markets compare to newer? Not sure if I have worded that the best but I think you'll get my drift

I like good quality handicaps with 8 - 14ish runners where the prices are compact. I despise maidens, novice races, sellers, claimers NH flat races, also wary off apprentice handicaps like the last 2 races at Ayr this afternoon.

I am still educating myself on the nags myself and that's what I like .

Something I find interesting is how the market no longer reacts to horses playing up like it used to imo. There was a good example with Regal Reality who despite not wanting to go down to the start at all did not drift, in fact as they showed it it actually shortened a few ticks but largely held steady.

The horse had already drifted prior to this.

It seems to happen a lot these days where horses shorten more than drift when they play up which doesn't make sense to me.
The horse did the same thing in his last race (probably behaved worse actually) and it won well... all be it, that was an easier contest. So you do need to take things like this into account.

The 2.30 Ayr looks an ideal trace to nab a tick or 2..............the graphs for the 1st 4 market are very non threatening shall I say and they are reasonably close together in price.

i traded the 2.30 ayr in play.
layed tanrudy and had a stop loss 8 ticks below current price which fro some reason triggered when tanrudy fell.

does anyone no would this be from everyone removing lay money quicker then i could remove my stop loss ?
turned what would have been £43 profit into £8.40 loss

I don't trade in-running but stop losses are always risky in-play and pre-race in poor liquidity markets because they can get triggered simply by people cancelling their orders rather than the price actually moving against you.

Had a satisfactory session on the nags today, afternoon & evening. Its pure drudgery and its not stimulating that is my only complaint.

Yep horse racing has got to be one of the most boring sports to watch. It can be a bit of a grind especially during the summer when it goes on til 9

I took yesterday and this afternoon off, but did a little this evening. I would agree, even with a limited sample!

Have you thought about having a crack at Australia? Win or lose, it's generally more exciting than UK racing, at least on a Saturday morning.

I have a good bot going during the day and have been thinking of utilising the Aussie market, are there lots of close finishes (horses) I was thinking of catching a few lays at lower odds. TIA

You'll find close finishes in any competitive racing over short distances with decent size fields, and there are plenty in Aussie racing.

I don't watch the races, the drudgery and lack of stimulation comes from just watching numbers on ladders.
