Pardew is quoted by the article as saying:

'Chris Hughton did a great job last season.'

Quite. And it begs the question of why he was sacked...

According to Wikipedia, 'Pardew was dismissed by [Southampton] amidst reports of low staff morale and conflicts between Pardew and club chairman, Nicola Cortese'.

By contrast, it seems that the only person who had any problem with Hughton was Mike Ashley...

Have to say this is a surprise. Given the management talent on the bench at the moment Ashley must have been trying to line this up for a while. Not sure the Newcastle fans will be happy.

The 'Controversies' section of Pardew's Wikipedia page makes interesting reading:

I notice the controversies section didn't say anything about his dismissal by Southampton

Peter, or any Saints fan could fill you in on the rumours. Needless to say, confidentiality agreements mean nobody has denied or confirmed the rumours, so this suggests there's an element of truth in them

Pardew is quoted as saying: 'Newcastle is one of the top five clubs in England'.

No offence to any Newcastle fans, but what planet is he living on?!?

How can a club that was in the Championship last season possibly be considered one the the top 5 clubs in England?!?

An interview with Chris Hughton:

His comments about his desire to get back into top-flight management makes me wonder if he as an eye on Ancelotti's job...
