Nice info.Bog wrote: ↑Wed Mar 18, 2020 1:38 pmCheers. It sure looks like greyhound was a very popular sport back then.LeTiss wrote: ↑Wed Mar 18, 2020 1:36 pmBeing a Southampton lad, I obviously know Bournemouth very well
That Bournemouth photo was from an old racetrack called Ensbury Park. It was built on an old aerodrome vacated by the RAF at the end of WW1. A stadium was built by McAlpine, but only lasted 3 years 1925-1928. They hosted both National Hunt horses and Greyhounds
The racetrack went bankrupt and in 1934 was demolished for housing in the expanding area of Kinson
The Greyounds moved to a stadium called Victoria Park which is the home of Bournemouth Poppies. They have played there since 1890's and play in the Wessex League. The greyhound racing only lasted until 1934 when it shut. The council bought the stadium and leased it back to the football team
Nearby Poole started hosting greyhounds in 1960 and have since. It was the brainchild of Charlie Knott, who also owned Southampton Greyhound Stadium......which is another story
The White City one was probably before WW2 as well.
It's not going away anytime soon.
