Quite.

It reminds me of Carol Thatcher's gaffe.

I would say that the fact that so many people were offended was more the fault of the person who brought the matter into the public domain, not Carol Thatcher.

And how saying that someone looks like a character on a jam jar is inherently racist is beyond me, but I digress!

The way some people think about the use of certain words, regardless of context, brings to mind this Monty Python sketch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIaORknS1Dk

Jeff I can’t believe that you can’t see what is wrong with calling something a character from a marmalade jar is wrong. You must know something of the way Europeans and Americans and Arabs and some Africans treated a race of people as nothing more then a commodity over 400 years or more. I suggest you look at origins of minstrel shows and “gollywogs” then you might see why that it can annoy a lot of the worlds population. I just don’t believe your that dumb.

As for the python sketch, its showing the absurdity of religious bigotry and sexism against women. Would appear to weaken your statement.

Tony

I don't see your point. I called what Carol Thatcher said a gaffe. She clearly didn't consider the sensibilities of other people. As perhaps you didn't with your 'dumb' comment - some people might say you're denigrating intellectually challenged people. :)

But she didn't call anyone anything. No harm was intended, and it doesn't make her a bigot. You wouldn't say that someone is against fat people because they said a particular person looks like Homer Simpson. This is no different.

As for the Monty Python sketch, it could equally be seen as a metaphor for Britain's secular religion - the liberal fascism of political correctness.

Jeff I was not denigrating intellectually challenged people, I was displaying my annoyance that someone who is clearly not “intellectually challenged”, (hence my statement “. I just don’t believe your that dumb”) using a poor example of someone who is clearly not intellectually challenged ,Carol Thatcher; describing a tennis player as a “golliwog” ( that was the cause of the controversy), as a reasonable argument in defence of Andy grays sacking.

I would expect a intellectually challenged person to use such a argument.

As for the Monty Python sketch being a metaphor for Britain's secular religion - the liberal fascism of political correctness, I can see it but I think that is quite tenuous, python were never really that subtle.

I wasn't accusing you of denigrating anyone. But it shows how easy it is to say something that might be unintentionally offensive to some people. I think you'd agree that the word 'dumb' has negative connotations. But you could also argue that one man's meat is another man's poison. :)

I can understand why people were offended by Thatcher's comment. I just think people need to toughen up if they're so easily offended! Ditto with Ron Atkinson's gaffe - he was clearly annoyed with Desaille's performance, not his race.

You're probably right. :)

There was another Monty Python clip (which I can't find on You Tube), which I would say was possibly a dig at political correctness. Someone starts telling the story of the good Samaritan and more or less gets accused of racism for using the word 'good'!

I think it inspired this Mitchell and Webb sketch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rywVlfTtlMY.

(WARNING: Contains blasphemy and strong language!).

"Well you have got a big nose!!"...............

Classic film and to think it was banned by a lot of cinemas and we had to travel around to try and find one that would screen it!!
