When you work out the average volume matched per race in each month, there isn't the clear downward trend over time that you might expect.

yep that's true. But it's neither upside trend. I had a feeling that now more money are concentrated on quality races than it used to be. But it's not so easy to view that because of different odds on favorites.

I take your point - we may not be comparing like with like.

I think a good category of race to use to study changes in volume is the all-weather tracks, as you have the same tracks and the same quality of racing throughout the year. So if you were to look at how much had been matched per horse in each month at (say) Wolverhamption, focusing on horses with BSPs of between (say) 2 and 2.5, that might give a clearer picture.
